The difference to other manual techniques lies in the combination of passive mobilization by the physiotherapist and active movement of the patient. New Zealander Brian Mulligan assumes that an already minimal position error of a correlated pair of joints causes obstruction of movement and a movement related pain. Alleviation of pain is the principle of this treatment. „Mobilisation with movement" aims at a pain free movement and to correct false joint positions. Scientific studies show a correlation between pain releive and functional improvement.
This treatment is successfully used when having a painful impaired mobility of the spine and peripheral joints.
